Ideas for a research project proposal, social media related.?

I have an assessment which involves comming up with a research proposal topic, I am interested in modern communication technology changing the world we live in - Social media, facebook/twitter etc... However, I need some advise as to whether this is a subject I can expand upon enough for 5,000 words... Also does anyone already know of some good litterature on this subject already.

Or any other interesting topics I could look into...

I think a good topic would be "Does social media and modern communication bring us closer together, or further apart?"

There are numerous online articles on this topic. You could read them, summarize the different ideas and then give your own conclusions. You could bring in your own experiences too.
