what is a pinned friend on facebook, does it have anything to do with timeline?

Recently I caught my wife private messaging (dirty sexual messages)a guy on facebook I made here unfriend him and delete him from her facebook account. A week later I was on her phone and found that he was "Pinned" I tried to delete him but can't. What does the term "Pinned" mean, does it have anything to do with timeline, what is timeline?

I have never heard of a "pinned friend" I have heard of a pinned post... but not what you're describing.
