WHY do people LOVE facebook so much? It is beyond me..?

I was in college when facebook started. It was required that you have an email account that ended in .EDU (hence, only college students were able to be "member" -- hence the name FACEBOOK --- a take off on the the booklet that was given freshman year with all the pictures of your fellow freshman to reference [and look for the hot co-eds])
But somewhere it because obsessive and I feel like instead of LIVING our lives, we are online trying to brag and show how Amazing we are and what stupid comments we can think of for our next post. What is so amazing about giving our privacy away, having our data sold to advertisement companies, given targeted ads in return and being targets to constant breaches of trojans, data theft and exposing WAY too much unnecessary, foolish information about ourselves. To me, it is sad and pathetic! Like that car commercial shows the parents out exploring and living life while their daughter is home bragging about her 500 friends and how "this is living" HA!
And I understand that it is socialization, but do you seriously talk to, or even want to talk to, all the people you are "friends" with? I have 600+ people and cannot lie -- 200 of them I wouldn't want to really talk to.
And I know that it is free and ads are used for providing the means to keep facebook free -- BUT do you have ANY idea how the "anonymous" information that Facebook sells to companies actually has contained our "personally identifiable" information?

I hate facebook sometimes. It's retarded how people sit there and play farmville for 3 hours and send cow requests

All I do on there is update my status, photos, and talk to people once in a while. I barely play games.

Facebook or internet is what you make of it. Facebook started as a means of socializing, now no one really knows how people react to certain things what they like and what they don't.

So facebook is really a personal choice, you can disclose very less information and still keep contacts and you can be a fool and upload every bit of information. It is all about how well informed you are about the technology you are using.

and about ads, people use facebook as free service now someone has to pay for the large amount of servers and other equipment which keep facebook running. so they need to have ads.

Why ?.... I love face book because... I live 1000 miles away from friends and family. With FB I can stay in touch alot easier and cheaper than a phone call or e-mail. I see pictures I other wise would have trouble seeing. I've made new friends from all over the world. I've joined groups that have the same interest as I do. I can go on and on . Do you get the point ? Face Book fills a great purpose for many people. Yes I do love Face Book. I feel closer to family and friends than I have for many years. It has enriched my life and I'm greatfull for that. Staying in touch with love ones is a good thing. Yes I do love Face Book.
