Groups have been a Facebook feature for several years, but the Facebook developers have changed their format and purpose as the website has grown into a worldwide entity. You may find that groups you previously belonged to no longer exist. A few factors can cause this, even if no one intentionally deletes the groups.

.

Facebook groups enable communities of Facebook users to gather and share information on a chosen topic of interest. Unlike pages, groups are not maintained by official representatives of businesses or organizations -- fans and enthusiasts are their motive force. For example, you might create a Facebook group for a study group in a college class or a play group for neighborhood parents. All groups have one or more "Admins," who control group content and settings.

Automatic Group Deletion
Facebook automatically deletes any group that has no members. Members of any group can choose to leave at any time. If the creator leaves the group as well as all members, Facebook will remove the group from the website, even if the creator did not intentionally delete it.

Group Removal for Abusive Content
Any group can be reported for displaying content that violates Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. Every Facebook user agrees to this statement upon signing up for a user account. If a group is reported, and the Facebook team determines that it is displaying abusive content, it will be removed from the website completely.

Archived Groups
If you've been a Facebook user for some time, you may have noticed that the group format changed in October 2010. "Old" groups created prior to this time still exist, but are in a different format than "new" groups. Facebook is "archiving" old groups so they are still accessible, but once a group is archived, its members are removed and must rejoin if they want to regain membership. If you cannot find a group in which you were previously a member, contact an Administrator to see if it still exists. If the last Adminstrator decided to leave it, the group has been deleted.
