I wonder why youtube and facebook got so rich?

I don't understand how it works. Eg: Facebook and youtube are websites that are free and i don't see much advertisement on their site but why can they earn up to billions of buckaroos?

YouTube was not making money either in the beginning, they made their money by selling the whole company to Google for $1.6 Billion.

They got their revenues from ads, dont underestimate the ad strategy, almost every link in youtube is tied to a mechanism running at the backend that suggest their popularity and like wise generating income for them.

*Ads doesn't have to visible to the naked eye to know its there.
