How are the friends on the side of your facebook profile chosen?

I was wondering how the people on the side of your facebook profile are chosen. I've heard a lot of things but I don't think they're true. I've heard:

• They're random - but I don't think they are because they are usually the same group of people just in a different order every time.

• They're the people you "interact with" the most - There are people who show up on my profile who I've never talked to over facebook or anything.

• They're the people whose profile you look at the most - People show up whose profile I only looked at maybe twice at the most.

And more stuff like that. Anyone know how they are really chosen? Thanks! (:
