How to casually start a Facebook conversation?

I really think "hey" is an awkward way and I really want to talk to this one particular guy and he's in my maths and English class. Is there any casual questions I could ask? Idk :/ and how to keep the convo going as well? Thanksss

just say "hey there " easy enough. let them start and then the flow will just go from there.

Personally, I would think it was a bit odd if someone I saw every day in a class would feel the need to start a conversation with me on Facebook rather than in real life.

You're in class with the guy. Ask him questions about an assignment. Just go up to him and talk to him.
