changing the subject HELP!!?

i am so confused about my maths. i need to work out cx(squared)=h. in class we did ab + c=d which is b=d-c/a but i am so confused about how to find this out can someone please help and tell me how you work it out!! thank you

This is where the importance of using parentheses/brackets comes in.

I can show you the second one:

ab + c = d

ab = d - c ........................ subtracted c from both sides

b = [(d - c) / a] ................. divided both sides by a

The one you're asking about at first is ambiguous.
And what is it that you are trying to make the subject?

cx(squared) = h

could be interpreted as

(cx)² = h

or

cx² = h

I happen to have the ² symbol. You can cut-and-paste that for future questions if you like. (I actually have a lot of math symbols stored on my Facebook page as a note which only I can see. My friends are not super-interested in math, so they don't need or want to see my math notes.)

At any rate, on sites like Yahoo Answers, exponents are usually denoted using the ^ symbol (shift-6 on your keyboard). This makes it so you don't have to type out (squared) all the time. For example, x(squared) would be typed x^2 , or x to the third power would be typed x^3 , etc.
