but thats the only one i really use. every time i use it differently everyone claims i used it wrong

You use it in front of any topic you are talking about. Usually as the punch line to a joke.

Examples:
Ice cream, puppies, and my grandmother. #thingsthatmakemehappy

Don't worry too much about them, many trending topics don't even need hash tags anymore.

#YOLO means "You only live once!" so you would put it after you said something particularly decadent.
