Why does it matter to have followers on Twitter?

I'm new on Twitter and follow a few people. I don't care whether or not I have followers. I don't yet. Why would it matter to me. I'm on twitter for selfish reasons.

If you are on Twitter to meet and learn from interesting people, the only way you are going to do that is by following those people, so that you get their tweets. However, when you follow them, they usually follow you.

The majority of people who are interested in having lots of people follow them want as many people as possible because they are trying to convey a message to a large audience either for pure information or to promote a product or service.

The more people you follow, the more people you will have follow you and the bigger your market reach.

There are lots of free Twitter API or applications available that can assist with getting follower that are in your niche and have similar interest. One of my favorite is Tweetspinner.
