Facebook profile picture gets stretched out as a thumbnail?

Very recently, when I've tried putting a new profile picture on facebook and the picture is VERTICAL, the photo will be uploaded flipped to a side. Then, I try to correct it by flipping it to the other side to make it look like it's supposed to, but once that's done, even if it looks ok when I open the picture, if I look at my profile, the thumbnail doesn't show it right. What can I do?

Crop the picture to make the top and bottom smaller. It shouldn't be so stretched out if you do that. Make it look as much like a square as possible.
