i can't seem to make my timeline pictures on facebook any smaller than about 5inches by 5 inches

What is your monitor size and resolution? Just saying inches isn't enough to know what the situation is.

Facebook timeline cover size is 851px (Wide) x 315px(Height). Just crop your picture into that size. You can use photoshop or any other softwares for cropping.

Timeline cover picture is a banner picture. It is not square picture.Timeline is a section that is meant to substitute both the wall and the profile page, by merging them together, being thus some sort of a blending between an online scrapbook and a blog. It also makes navigation through posts much easier, as it shows your Facebook story in a reverse chronological order, listed by year on the right side of the page.
