I think you get notifications with your close friends. If you talk to them constantly Facebook will put then as close friends and you'll start getting notified when they post. You can change that in settings(:

difference between friends and close friends on Facebook is that, if you select anyone as close friend then you will get notification about all activity of his or her such as if your best friend will like any one then you will get a notification that he or she like this. whereas for friend it will normal you will see their activity on your timeline.
