You download the facebook messenger application from the app store.

You go into the application and choose to sync with contacts.

Will Bob still show up as a synced facebook mobile app contact?

No They Dont Have To You Can Sync Your Phone With Facebook Messenger and Get there Contact Information onto Your Phone But They Dont Have To Have You in Theres Unless They Sync There Phone With Facebook Messenger As Well Even Than They Have the Option to Delete you From There Contacts List
