It isn't actually worth that much. The amount someone would be willing to pay for it also includes the amount they felt they could make by selling it again afterwards; the difference is probably not that large compared to the overall price.

Facebook has hosted adverts for ages, on the right hand side, when in profile view, they have a column of about 3 adverts at a time.

When I visit Facebook, I sometimes see an advertisement in the column on the right under the heading "Sponsored." As far as I know, these ads are tailored to each user based on the sort of things they have under their interests and favourites, among other things. This means that sometimes they are quite interesting and relevant, and I have actually clicked on Facebook ads before. Third party applications also account for a large portion of Facebook's profits, as many of them allow users to spend money for features.
