What is Twitter & what is it about Twitter?

I have facebook but people are going crazy over Twitter; I don't understand what Twitter is or what about it is different/better than facebook? Someone, please enlighten me.

Twitter is a site where you can give small messages about anything. It is totally different from facebook. On Facebook you have a broader canvas to paint what you are doing. There you can post your pictures, video, books that you are reading, take quizzes what not. On twitter you can only post a text message upto 144 characters. Facebook shows lots of advertisements. I don't think twitter shows yet.

Both are social networking sites. They serve different needs. Twitter lets you post your status very quickly while Facebook is for a more detailed status update.
