Financial Issues with my horse.. need help!?
I"m going through a hard time.. I might have to sell my horse. I've been super stressed out and have been freaking out. I am selling some of my stuff to cover this months board.. But in two weeks I'll be struggling again. I was thinking of making an online/facebook/instagram business. I was also thinking of making a gofundme but people wouldn't fun me because people think they are scams. I know some are.
Do you have any suggestion on ways I can raise money?
I was also thinking of making horsey tee-shirts and jackets but I don't know how to do that. Unless there is a website I can use to make them but be able to sell them?
Thank you!
Casey- I've thought about that but I've put so much money into him I don't want some random rider coming and causing bad habits on him after I've worked so hard to get him out of a lot. I also don't feel all too comfortable letting a stranger ride my horse. No offense. I know this sounds harsh, that is a last resort. I am trying to get some way to cover board. I'll pull from shows and training. I have though about leasing but that would be the thing I try to do before selling him.
Some more information on me:
My aunt would pay for my board, but she has breast cancer and is really stressed out so she doesn't want to have to worry about me.. I'm 15 and pay for all my shows, horse showing, et myself. I got free part training because I help out my trainer. My mom is disabled and my dad isn't in the picture.. So the only way I could afford him would be to drop out of school, but school is important to me. I get very stressed out easily and currently have ulcers. The one thing that keeps me sane is being ripped away.

Well until you can make enough money not to worry about horsey fees, why not full/half lease him out? You'll make about as much as you pay for board and won't have to sell him

Edit: I understand, I'd feel the same way. I'm retraining my horse and I wouldn't want anyone to ruin it. Have you tried talking to the barn owner about working to pay off some of your board until you are stable? You can't really work right now since you're 15, you're best bet besides leasing would be to just look around for babysitting oppurtunities, being a groom at shows, have ppl pay you for doing their dirty work (mucking stalls, etc), I can't really think of anything for you to do. Do you know of anyone that would let you use their land to keep your horse at temporarily? (Make sure they aren't sketchy)

You can lease.
Doesn't mean you get some "random" rider. This is what interviews are for. You get to choose who will lease and who will not.

You can also loan your horse to a Therapy riding place. They won't overuse your horse. Your horse can get good care and be loved by kids (if it's a good kid horse) and have a nice quiet life and yet, you will still be the owner. You are NOT giving your horse away. You KEEP the papers to your horse. You just are not financially responsible for the horse at all (the therapy place pays for all upkeep. vet care, etc).

Then you can take your horse back when you are ready.

I know of this option because I did it a few years ago with a kid horse I had. I loaned him out for 2 years and he was loved so much there. It was a great decision. I was going out of state at the time.

As for "GoFundMe" that's asking for welfare. I personally would see that as a "mooch" approach. You're asking strangers to pay your bills. That's like asking people to pay your rent or light bill. No way.

If you are showing, stop showing. that's not a necessity and it's a ridiculously expensive hobby.

Move your horse to a pasture stable and pay for pasture by working after school.

Bottom line:
If you find a way you can make it work.

Sometimes life has to change.
I mean, put yourself in your aunt's shoes and see how lucky you are to just have a healthy body. She is facing death. you're facing, maybe selling your horse. yes, that's awful but you can't come back from death. it's permanent.

And your mother's disability? permanent too?

You've been So lucky to have a horse at 15, as most people don't have that much.

If you can get a job maybe around your barn to either help pay for boarding or they could pay you directly im 15 too and since im to young to get a real job my neighbor pays me to put away and feed her horses so maybe you can do something like that. or if you do crafts, you could sell them online like i make crochet patterns and sell them on craftsy
And if this is posible for you, you could do independant studies instead of normal school that way your time will be more flexible to do work but i relize that its hard to leave normal school becouse of friends and other stuff.

I know you don't like the idea but half-leasing your horse may be a good idea. You don't need to lease him to a random rider. A lot of owners who lease their horses are picky about who is the one riding. You will have complete control over who rides your horse. Plus, as the half-leaser you can choose the days when you want to ride him.
