Can Instagram mess up your phone?

I got an Android phone and about a week after having it, I downloaded Instagram on it. After that it kept on having glitches and freezing. I uninstalled Instagram but I'm not really sure if that helped much. I read an article about 10 things that suck about Android phones and one of the things was that they always had glitches. Can Instagram mess up your phone or are most Androids like this?
