How do you get more Twitter followers?

I was recently introduced to the mainstream Twitter craze, so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon. http://twitter.com/caseyrosenberg
I was thinking of being able to make my "Tweets" and replies entertaining, but I've realized quickly, it's not like YouTube where the views and subscriptions come to you right away. Is there any advice on how to get a Twitter base? Or is it not the route to go if you're not already at a celebrity status?
