How would you define social networking or social media?

I'm trying to come up with just a broad definition and am curious of what you have to say. Thanks!

Social Networking is exchanging personal information and experiences while maintaining relationships on line. It is done through interactive web sites where people submit photos and disclose background information for specific people to see. They also carry on conversations both in real time and non-real time by way of private and public messages.
