You pay yearly for it.

I own two of them, have owned one for over 5 years now. Just recently bought the second and paid for a year for it.

You are effectively paying a rental fee once a year, it's actually more of an administrative fee, large established web site prepay their domain name 5 or 10 years in advance.

If one allows a domain name expire, it goes back into the pool of avilable names after a reclamation period of something like 90 days. A domain name with age is worth more than a brand new one for search ranking purposes, there are brokers who buy thousands of names before they expire and resell them for a profit. A few names that get lots of type-in traffic have sold for over a Million dollars.

You register a domain name annually, most domain names you can register for up to 10 years. If you are wanting a reputable domain registrar, I would recommend http://webneto.com

Domains are paid on annual base.

You can have a domain for Minimum one yr. and Maximum 10 Yrs. and further you can keep renew.

Few registrar's offer Pre Paid a/c or Auto Charge system ( from your CC ) which automatically renew your domain before expiry.
