Should people be allowed to sue fast food restaurants for causing obesity? - Michelle - 11-18-2012 01:04 PM

I'm in a debate class and this is the next topic!
So I'm wondering what people might come up with. Please feel free and help!
In my opinion it isn't the restaurant's fault at all.
People make choices. It's sort of the same with tobaccos.

A woman filed a lawsuit to McDonalds because she spilled coffee onto her lap and she said it was "too hot." McDonalds had to pay about 23 m.

No one is forcing anyone to buy fast food or cigarettes. As long as people demand it, they will supply it.

[edit]
I studied the latter case in my law class. That woman deserved the money because the hot coffee burned and severely damaged her genital area. She suffered 3rd degree burns, that coffee was WAY too hot, it was over the boiling temperature. By the way, she got the contingency fee deal with her lawyers and McDonald's appealed. So, the 23 million was greatly reduced and with the contingency fee, the lawyers' paid for their research with the money and on top of that got 1/3 of what was left, so she barely got any of that money.

i don't think so...i mean they willingly buy the food and eat it on their own...nobody forced them to do it. its addictive so its like they have to quit and quit again. call it corporate americas fault but too many people are hooked to start a ban...other than that..they can't be sued unless they were banned and then ran a black market.

Absolutely not. Fast food is extremely, extremely, extrememly bad for you, and people know that. Ever seen "Supersize Me"? Interesting movie. No, it's obviously their choice to kill themselves. You don't HAVE to eat at a fast food place. Nobody's making you. Personally, I think fast food restaurants should just be banned altogether, or forced to make healthier food. It's ridiculous and it makes me want to be sick.

I swear they put chemicals in their food to make you want to go back. I am addicted to Wendy's right now. Ha. It is easier to eat fast food than to eat healthy. Tastes better too. But back to the point, we're fat because we choose to be fat. The fast food industry just gives us a tool to get there. They aren't to blame. We are and we shouldn't be allowed to sue them for our own over-indulgences.

not at all

NO

People should sue themselves for lack of willpower.

I cannot believe this is the society we live in today. Never taking responsibility for our own actions.

no they shouldnt :

Reason number 1: no one forced them to consume all of that fatty foods.

number 2: how can it be proven that it was only the meal from said resturant that made this person obese

number 3: when the consumer saw that their wight was getting out of control it is the consumer who has to say no i cant eat this .. The resturant is not going to say that you have consumed to many hamburgers and we cant serve you any longer
a) because that would be an offensive comment and leaves the company to become in some sort of legal issue.
