Y alone is just a short way to type 'why'. 8 is used in things like l8r. Using 'l' '8' and 'r', you just spelled later.

They're shortcuts for emoticons used in MSN.
(Y) = thumbs up (8) = music note |

(Y) and (8) are MSN shortcuts from ye days of olde - (y) meaning "thumbs up" (smiley), (n) meaning "thumbs down" (smiley), (8) being a musical note. I don't know how they're used elsewhere, I guess it just makes sense if you know them.
