I found a friend on facebook and wanted to add them. It doesn't show an add as friend box though?

I found a friend on facebook and wanted to add them. It doesn't show an add as friend box though?
I've added many friends and relatives on facebook but for some reason this person's page doesn't show a box to add as friend. Next to the name it has a tiny picture that has a blank face. I thought maybe I sent a request already but it doesn't say "waiting confirmation". Anyone know why the add as friend box isn't showing? Thanks in advance.
