Is it legal for a school union to fire a teacher who has a facebook account?

For just having one? No, that's not legal, unless there is something specific in their contract that says they won't create accounts on networking sites or something. On the other hand, if they are using it for questionable activities, or to upload questionable content, then that would be a problem.

I don't know of any specific cases of this, but several of my professors use Facebook regularly, and there have been no problems. Then again, there is a difference between say, high school teachers using it, and college professors using it....
