Simple. You really need to engage with people on Twitter. Yes, there are software and third party sites offering you thousands of followers for a fee. But these are strangers. Would you want to have a community of people who don't really care much about what you do? I'd rather have a few hundreds, but engaged followers, than thousands or millions of them. I guess, you only have to be real and talk to your tweeps like you would do in real life, not like this girl on this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aswwf3bu1I8
