what does (Y) and (8) mean on things like facebook and twitter?

(Y) and (8) are MSN shortcuts from ye days of olde - (y) meaning "thumbs up" (smiley), (n) meaning "thumbs down" (smiley), (8) being a musical note. I don't know how they're used elsewhere, I guess it just makes sense if you know them.
