I don't know about 60 years ago. I am not quite that old.
I have to say it is better in some ways and worse in others. The 70s were actually pretty good for most people. Possibly because the 60s were a time of upheaval. The 80s were great, in spite of disco. By the time the 90s came around we were seeing the effects of the rise in the new puritanism. Censorship was increasing, liberties were being restricted again. Then came the Bush years. What a frigging disaster. Things seem to be turning around a bit, swinging back towards more equality, more actual freedom. Tech has made many things better, but our economics have made fewer real jobs for us, and the centralization, concentration, of everything has reduced a lot of our choices. Some things we will never get back. We will never have the freedom of travel the same way we had during the 70s. Borders were much more porous then. I doubt we ever escape the tracking and monitoring computers have made possible. We will never have the same open lands to explore we had before the 90s just because there are so many more of us now. As the line out of one song goes, people can't sleep on the beaches here anymore. |
