A most bare bones and basic answer is this:

Social Media Otimization (SMO) means posting content (ie. your blog and forum posts, tweets, website content and articles) which is RELEVANT to your business and uses keywords (which are "common" words of your topic) so that when someone is searching "your topic" then your content shows up in the search results.

If you are knowledgeable about the topic, then your writing will be natural and the terms you use will be relevant and the search engines will find this and serve it up to people searching. That is what you want. That is the goal. Then if you have the content "linked" to your website or blog, this is what brings the vistors to you (called "driving traffic.)
