Unless you know the person outside of Facebook, do not send them a friend request. It doesn't matter if you have researched some genealogy and found a long-lost distant relative.

What matters is the person's response when he or she is asked "Do you know this person outside of Facebook?"

If they don't know you, then sending friend requests puts your account at risk.
