Why does McCain thinks putting Social Security into the stock market is a good idea?

With the recent banking crises, I think that idea will be on hold for a few years. Markets pay a higher return in good times, but they also frequently lose all your money. Had social security been invested in the markets recently, it would be gone now and the taxpayers would be asked for another trillion to meet that crises. It has happened elsewhere and that is why sensible people oppose it. Social security is a very minimal pension backed by US government securities paying the long-term federal funds rate. If you have extra money, feel free to invest it outside the system in a 401K or IRA and hope the markets stay up until you need to draw on it.
