Because Social Security is a pay as you go system doomed to failure. Once the Baby Boomers retire the whole mess will collapse because the number of people collecting will outweigh the number of people working.
By shifting from a pay as you go system to an investment system you can grow the funds to match the needs and not rely on the current work force to fund the retirement of the past work force. However, they've waited to long. Political pussyfooting around the third rail has ensured the collapse of Social Security. If you're under 40 you will not see a dime of the SS you've paid so far. |
