Huh I didn't understand you question. Did you mean WHY do people say sex when theY mean gender?

well if it is then they use it because both *sex* and *gender* mean the same. Simple as that.
just like sex has two meanings. One is gender and the the other one is you know that im not gonna explain all Tongue, also saying sex instead of gender is more formal. if you see while creating an account on facebook for eg. you see that they write sex instead of gender.So i thiunk that's the reason you can use both actually.
