Yep, I think you might be onto something. There are quite a few cases of girls who attempt suicide in the midst of an ongoing fight with a boyfriend. They're probably not thinking rationally when they make these attempts, and it's possible that they're not really intending to die. In situations like that, yes, it looks like a person is actually turning their rage for someone else onto themselves.

Obviously, it's a bad idea.

Apparently, if you look at the references, the Montreal Gazette reported that LiveJournal was investigating all the deaths (including suicides) referenced on their site; only 10% were actually real. It IS a Wikipedia article, so you never know how accurate it is, but if that statistic is true, it's pretty interesting!

EDIT: I should add that this isn't the case with all suicides. But it's definitely possible with some.
