Hello Three55,
This is already sounding like a bad HDD! I would highly recommended doing a data backup before doing anything! After that I would try in run diagnostics to make sure it is a bad HDD. Just to make sure, once you find out the results then you can go from there. Note: Depending on the manufacturer there should be diagnostic tools for you to use HP is usually by hitting the "esc" key and Dell is hitting the "F12" key upon powering on the computer You could try Seagate and Western Digital diagnostic as well to make sure your HDD is bad. If it is indeed a bad HDD, replace the faulty HDD and reinstall OS. Sometimes DVD drives can cause noises as well, if there is a disc that's jammed in the drive, it happens!
