Not possible, unless you know that his name is the same as his Gmail account. What you could do is sign up for a Gmail account yourself through Google, then start participating in Google Buzz, and search for your friend's name in that way.

But keep in mind that Google is not stupid, and they offer good privacy protections. Even if your friend uses his name as his gmail account user id, Google offers the option to select an anonomyous all-numeric profile name, in order that one cannot be found even if someone DOES know your email account name. And that's true whether you use your actual name or not for your Gmail account userid.
