If you are bidding on a popular item, which is attracting a lot of bids, unless you are using special bid sniping software, you'll never win.

Even though eBay states that the use of such software is illegal and not allowed on any eBay auction, don't believe it.

You're best chance of winning an auction, legally, is to wait until the very last 30 seconds before placing your bid. You might still lose, but at least you have only placed the one bid, not many, like others tend to do.
