How much are you willing to pay for the item? If your maximum bid (which is a mystery to your rival bidder) isn't as impressive as your rival bidder's maximum bid (which is a mystery to you until the bidding ends), then you won't win the item.

I suggest that you stop bidding for a while, make your rival bidder think that you're no longer interested in the item. Wait until the day when the bidding is scheduled to end. Then one minute before it ends, jack up your maximum bid to make keep your chances high. Cross your fingers that in those last 60 seconds, your rival doesn't have enough time to outbid you.
