Word of mouth is a common focus of many martial arts establishments. PPC (Pay Per Click online advertising, such as Google Adwords) is also a good way to gain visibility quickly, and even customers if you set up the campaign and landing pages correctly.

I'd recommend doing a little bit of research into SEO (http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo is a good place to start) and make sure your website follows those principles. Long term, many small businesses find search engine optimization to provide the highest ROI.
