You are looking at 2 different issues here. Your wireless connection is NOT the Internet connection. WIFI connection strength and speed will depend on your relation to the router. But if the router is not connecting to the Internet correctly you do not have an Internet connection. First check the lights on your router to see if they are showing the correct pattern. If not you may need to unplug its' power and then reconnect. Then restart the machine. It may be worth trying this even if the lights seem correct. If this does not help, go to start/run (start/search under Windows 7) and type in cmd and enter. Then type in ipconfig and enter. Under the wireless card details you should have an IP address like :
192.168.1.2, or 10.0.0.2
There should also be a default gateway in a similar pattern. If there is not the wireless is NOT really connected. This may mean you do not have the correct encryption key for the wireless on the router. It will still report connected if it can request a connection and receive a reply. even if the reply is go way. So you will need to find the key by asking whoever set it up.
