On what works best, all depends on how much time you are willing to invest, as SEO takes time and patience. If you have the time, then do SEO yourself, you will learn new interesting stuff. If not, then get a good SEO package from a good company, no individuals as you don't get clients that guarantee their current work and reputation. This may seem like spending money that you don't have to but sometimes this can result in saving you money as it would save you time for you to do something else.
