A website giving reference to another website in the form of backlink. Many backlinks from different domains is highly influence the seo rankings.
According to the new google penguin algorithm the backlinks from most relevance websites can boost the seo rankings and backlinks from un-relevance websites may hurt seo rankings.

The backlinks are one-way, two way links and three way backlinks are common backlinks
One-way backlinks highly recommended. The directory submission, blog, forum, social book marking, article submision and press release are common backlinks
