Hello,

You want to set your pages to <meta name="robots" content="INDEX, FOLLOW"> when you want the spiders, such as Google bots (and others), to crawl that page.

Set a page to <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow" /> when you do not want it crawled.

And yes, it is important to set these meta tags not just for Google.
