What's the difference between 'Hide from Timeline' and 'Delete post' on Facebook?

Deleting a post means it's gone forever. Hiding it on your timeline means that nobody else can see it. However, if you click 'activity log' you should still be able to see anything you have hidden, or posts from applications whose activity you don't allow to be shown on your timeline.
