What to major in for non-profit or social work?

I am a college freshman and I want to one day work for a non-profit (something involving children)) and I want to be pretty hands-on. I don't want to be an accountant or behind-the-scenes, so I'm choosing not to major in business, despite that being many people's suggestion. I have considered minoring in business, though, simply because I might one day wish to do less on-scene work as I get older. My school does not offer social work or communication as a major or I would choose one of those. A lot of my family and close friends seem to think that sociology is not a wise choice to get a degree in, for reasons ranging from "it's too broad" to "no one even knows what that is" -_-
I don't have too many options and I'm having serious trouble choosing the one that would be best for what I want to do. Thanks in advance for any info/ advice!!

And I know I asked pretty much this exact question a few days ago, but all the answers that kept coming up were spam for some reason. And I wanted to include my other major options to see if anyone saw something I didn't. But if you actually answered this question last time I posted it, thank you for your answer! There were three very helpful ones, the rest were rubbish, so I deleted the question.
