what are some of the benefits of working for the state/government as opposed to working for a regular company?

The benefits are typically better (more days off, etc.) The pay is usually not as good. If you want a career in the public sector (government, military support, department of defense), it's good to have government experience. If not, you may find it a frustrating experience - government offices tend to be very bureaucratic and move very slowly.
