Being a Geelong supporter, I hope you can figure it out. It didn't start in 1989 or even 2008.
Geelong hating Hawthorn started back in 1963. The Hawthorn thug mentality of "Kennedy's Commandos" was in full force. At 3 quarter time of the Grand Final, Bobby Davis told the Cats to teach Hawthorn a football lesson. Graham Farmer and the Cats did it. 1989, well if the 4th quarter would have lasted another 3 min or so, Geelong would have got a draw or won the game. Geelong didn't so they moved on. 2008, well the rules got changed because Hawthorn was AFRAID to play rebound from 50 football. Geelong's twenty-three behinds included eleven rushed behinds by Hawthorn, most of which were deliberate. Hawthorn defenders made a clear effort to rush behinds whenever there was any applied pressure from the Geelong forwards. This was one of the major contributing factors to a rule change the following year, prohibiting defenders from conceding rushed behinds unless under immediate pressure. It was girly, scared football and no matter how you slice it, Alastair Clarkson would still be in prison for grand larceny and conduct unbecoming of a coach if Hawthorn's play was illegal in a court of law. Didn't help that Jeff Kennett couldn't keep his mouth shut, saying Geelong did not have the "mental drive" to beat the Hawks. I hope that explains from the Geelong point of view, at least my point of view. |
