Or is it going to remain a personal choice whether you get Timeline or stay with the "old" Facebook profile?

As per Facebook Rules, yes it is mandatory and you cant avoid it but there are still some people who are out of it but they wont be for long .. in couple of days .. facebook will force it on you..
but timeline aint a bad thing .. look at the source for proof |

Originally, it was inevitable! However, given the amount of complains Facbook has received about Timeline, it is still a choice to stick with the old profile. Having said that, we do not know when Facebook will have a mind swing.

this is permanent you can create a new account to availing old style |
