A "HashTag" is a way for people on the Internet to find things easier. For example: #prayfortalia is a way for Talia's family to look at all the photos about that topic. So lets say I post a picture and hashtag it with ( #FAIL ) people can click on the hashtag and see all the post that are related to Fails.

Computers need some way to know what a line of text is. For example, if the text contains a "@" then the computer will assume it is an email address. The hash sign (#) indicates to the computer (or other devices like a smart phone) that the text which follows is a tweeter link.

It originally started on Instagram, when you put a hashtag ( # ) infront of a word or sentence you've not only uploaded it onto your page put sorted it into a folder that everyone in the world can see when they search something. Example; I post a picture of a cupcake and type #yum#cake#strawberry, now if people search these words on Instagram my picture will come up. There is no reason to do it on Facebook as it doesn't do the same thing but it seems people just like putting them in there captions now Smile I hope this helped sorry it's lengthy.

Hi,

A hash tag is this symbol #

A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #.

It is a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging and social networking services such as Twitter, Tout, identi.ca, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Google+ or Facebook may be tagged by putting "#" before important words, as in:

#Wikipedia is an #encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

Hashtags provide a means of grouping such messages, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it.

You're not alone, a lot of people don't know what hashtags are - http://www.girlsaskguys.com/Other-Questi...shtag.html

It's just a way to organize topics so you can see other posts of the same topics with one click.
