Why are video games frowned upon?

Video Games have existed for a long time now, Yet from the News to the average Joe, it is seen as a nerdy, dangerous, waste of time. Why?

They are a waste of time which is good if you what to waste time and its not frowned upon

It's mostly seen like that by the elderly that grew up watching non color tv or the poor younger ones who's parents didn't let them play it.

@wiggles, well I would consider most things people do a waste of time, if video games are a waste, then so is watching tv 8 hours on average (how much most people watch), texting and being on facebook for hours on end instead of talking to people in person, doing any other hobby and then the only thing that isn't a waste is working.. people need leisure time and games are a good way to have fun and even relieve stress, unless you're playing with angry 8 year olds.. ;D
